Walker log
1633598312Code 7070 Walker logBrass log signed Walker’s Excelsior IV Patent Log, For Yacht, Motor Launches and Fishing Craft made in the early 1900s. Placed in its original wooden box with brass hinges and closing hooks, complete with accessories. Very good condition. Box size 38.5x18x15.5 cm - 15.15x7x6 inches. It is an ancient nautical instrument, which measured the distance and speed of a ship. The propeller was thrown overboard and dragged behind the ship itself, rotating it transmitted the number of turns made on itself to the three quadrants of the log. The data was then read every hour to also derive the speed.

Figurehead
1676026771Code 7525 FigureheadFigurehead in carved oak depicting a female figure whose body has the shape of a siren, symbol of fertility and protection, with female features in the upper part and fish tail instead of legs in the lower one. Northern European manufacture dating back to the second half of the 19th century. It is a refined sculpture that almost certainly portrays the owner’s wife or lover, who commissioned a good sculptor of the time, probably a madonnaro, to create the figurehead. The work brings out numerous details, the hair framing the finely sculpted and well-proportioned face with an ecstatic expression and is gathered within a headdress whose shape recalls the statue of liberty in New York. The generous and turgid breasts are uncovered, a bunch of grapes with leaves is carved on the pronounced belly, the grape as a symbol of freedom of the senses and earthly pleasures as well as being a symbol of fertility, wealth and Abundance which brings back the life. It was carved in oak wood, and due to its features it certainly belongs to a merchant ship, almost certainly a medium-sized brig. Its measurements are 60 inches in height, and 12 inches in maximum width. The carving was done by hand with the use of a round carving gouge. The lack of arms is typical of the figureheads of the second half of the nineteenth century, when for practical reasons, since the arms came off with a certain frequency due to sea shocks, or were damaged by the jib sheets during tacking, it was preferred do not highlight them.

Harpoon Ship Log
1682781476Code 7529 Harpoon Ship LogBrass log in the shape of a harpoon, signed T. Walker’s Patent Harpoon Ship Log A 1 London, from the second half of the 19th century. It is an ancient nautical instrument, very rare and with a characteristic shape, which measured the distance and speed of a ship. He was thrown overboard and dragged behind the ship itself; rotating thanks to its propeller, it transmitted the number of revolutions made on itself to the three dials made on an enameled metal plate placed in the center of the log; the quadrants reported measurements in miles from 0 to 100 in tens, from 0 to 10 in units, from 0 to 1 in quarters. The data was then read every hour to also derive the speed. In excellent condition, fully functional and mounted on a custom-made brass wooden base. Length 50 cm – 19.7 inches, propeller width 14 cm - 5.5 inches, log body diameter 4,5 cm - 1.7 inches.

Antique Figurehaed
1686152598Code 7565 Antique FigurehaedAntique wooden figurehead depicting Giacomo Uncino better known as Captain Hook, famous pirate and the main antagonist of Peter Pan. Hook is the fictional captain of a cruel pirate ship. He is so called because instead of his right hand he has an iron hook, his hand was cut off by Peter Pan during a fight and then fed to a crocodile, which liked the hand so much that he hopes to eat the pirate as well at the which one continues to hunt. The work, in carved chestnut wood was created by a good Ligurian sculptor at the end of the 19th century, of excellent workmanship portraying the half-bust of a bearded man, the right eye bandaged and the hook instead of the right hand, while the left hand holds a large sword and a bandana as a headdress. Measure cm 35x27 altezza cm 88 – inches 13.7 x 10.6 x 34.6 Chestnut is a precious wood and very resistant to bad weather and wind. The broken sword was restored in an earlier period, otherwise the state of conservation is very good.
