422013154426734Code 2515 Portolano Golfe St DrelyAntique portolano of Golfe De St. Drely, engraved on a copper plate by Antoine Roux, Marseille France 1844. Very good condition. Including frame cm 38x1.7x31 - inches 15x0.66x12.

Joseph Roux came from a family of hydrographers and with his son Joseph Juniorhad a specialized tipography in Marseille. In 1764 Roux had released a work named Recueil des principaux plans des ports et de Rades de la Mer Méditerranée ... small, very handy because of its maneuverability and in fact it was reprinted several times until 1848.

Pilot book, or portolano, a word coming from the Latin portus (port), is a manual for sailors, for coastal and harbour navigation; it represents on plane and in scale, using conventional symbols, all knowledge about geography, coasts and ports. The oldest pilot’s books, in Middle Ages, came from Greek and Latin periplus: during Classic Ages there were not real nautical maps, so they were used some books that described coasts, not originally created for navigation, but for tell some travels or for celebrate deeds of captains.
