Length m. 154 - Width, 17 - Gross tonnage 9000 tonnes - Net 5035 - Speed at tests 16.22”. Navigazione Generale Italiana was a shipping company established in 1881 by the merger of the Flotte Riunite Florio company Palermo and the Rubattino Company Genoa; starting from 1901 the N.G.I. took control of the company "La Veloce", a shipping company founded in 1884 which carried out its service between Italy and South America, which in 1924 after being completely absorbed by "Navigazione Generale Italiana" was put into liquidation. Navigazione Generale Italiana was then absorbed in 1932 by Società Italia Flotte Riunite.

The Oceania passenger motor ship was built on behalf of the Cosulich Società Triestina di Navigazione di Trieste and launched on 29th September 1932. Being particularly suitable for cruise use, on 20th June 1933 Cosulich handed it over to Società Italia Flotte Riunite, and on 8th July 1933 it was inaugurated the first of four inaugural cruises in the Eastern Mediterranean departing from Trieste. On 26th June1940 the ship was requisitioned by the state authorities to be used for transporting troops to Tripoli. On 26th May 1941 it passed under the direct command of the Italian Navy. It moved in the late afternoon on 16th September 1941 from Taranto to Tripoli in a convoy with its twin Neptunia carrying 5,818 men, and at dawn on 18th September the English submarine HMS Upholder torpedoed it together with the Neptunia. Among the 5,818 men aboard the two ships, 384 died; the others were saved by escort fighters.
