The instrument was created in the 1950s by the Italian Phiwe of Turin and marketed by the La Lucerna company via Nino Guerrini 7 Cuneo, complete with the original booklet in Italian with instructions for use.
The Tellurio is powered by electricity with a 220 Volt bulb that simulates sunlight, while the clockwork mechanism with belt and pulleys works with two electric motors powered by two 4.5 volt batteries.
The instrument shows and simulates the rotation and revolution movements of the Earth, the position of the Earth with respect to the Sun in the various seasons, the movements of the Moon around the Earth, the lunar phases and the eclipses of the Moon and the Sun.

It is an instrument equipped with two concave mirrors, the primary mirror collects the light and makes it converge towards a focus placed in front of the secondary mirror; in turn the secondary mirror brings the light back towards the primary mirror, which has a hole in the center containing the eyepiece.

The brass instrument rests on a tripod base, with the Earth in the center, under it four arms hold the wooden spheres painted in black and white, which depict the various phases of the Moon.
A crank connected to a gear allows the four arms depicting the Moon to rotate around the Earth in order to show the different aspect that the Moon shows towards the Earth during its motion.
The lunar phases repeat every 29 days.
