Coprolites
1778080853Code Coproliti CoprolitesCollection of 15 pieces of turtle coprolites. Coprolites are fossilized feces from prehistoric turtles. This is fossilized excrement that provides evidence of the diet and behavior of prehistoric turtles. These finds date primarily to the Eocene or Miocene (about 40-50 million years ago) and come from South Dakota, USA. Over time, the excrement mineralizes, transforming into a fossil that preserves the shape and sometimes remains of what the animal ate. This makes them useful to paleontologists for studying how turtles lived based on their diet and environment. Analyzing the remains reveals traces of plants, small crustaceans, shell fragments, or even bones of other animals trapped within the fossil. The pollen and mineral sediments preserved within reveal the type of environment—swamp, river, or sea—the turtle lived in. Sometimes they reveal traces of intestinal parasites that plagued the animal millions of years ago.
