Mounted on a custom-made iron and brass base.
Good condition. Ammonite measures 13.5 x 3 x 11 cm – 5.4 x 1.2 x 4.3 in.
The period is related to the Jurassic (150–170 million years ago), the second period of the Mesozoic era, characterized by a marine invasion that transformed Europe into a vast archipelago.
The ensuing warm climate favored the development of cycads and conifers; among the fauna, ammonites are of particular stratigraphic importance, named after the Egyptian god Ammon due to the characteristic spiral shape of their shell, similar to a twisted horn.
Ammonites belong to a group of extinct marine animals that lived over a very long period from the Paleozoic Era to the end of the Mesozoic Era, between 400 and 65 million years ago, when they disappeared along with many other organisms (dinosaurs, flying and aquatic reptiles) during the well-known biological crisis of the end of the Cretaceous Period.
They possessed a chambered shell, that is, one divided into chambers, generally coiled in a spiral.
Ammonites were skilled swimmers thanks to the unique structure of their shells. After the first chamber, called the habitation chamber, where the animal lived, there was a series of watertight chambers with a siphon running through them. These chambers could be easily filled with gas, allowing them to float perfectly, allowing them to sink or surface just like modern submarines. They also used a jet propulsion system to move horizontally. Numerous forms of ammonites have evolved over time, allowing scientists to use them to date the rocks in which these fossils are found, which is why they are called "guide fossils."
Being exclusively marine organisms, their discovery also provides information on the presence of ancient seas at the excavation site.
Due to their great scientific importance and the beauty of their forms, they have always been considered the symbol of paleontology.

The legislative decree n. 42/2004 stipulates that who sells works of art or historical and archaeological items has the obligation to deliver to the purchaser the documents attesting to the authenticity of the object, or at least to submit the documents relating to the probable attribution and origin.
