The carrack or nao (both terms meant simply ship) was a sailing vessel with three or four masts that spread in the Mediterranean Sea during the fifteenth century. It was equipped with a foremast and a mainmast square sails and a lateen sail on mizzenmast, but also brought the innovation of the stern flat and not round. The carracks were the first ships in Europe used in ocean navigation, large enough to tackle the rough seas, and roomy enough to carry provisions for long journeys. With these ships, the Spanish and Portuguese during the fifteenth century and sixteenth century, explored the world: a famous example of carrack is in fact the S. Mary of Columbus.
