1785405167Code 8564 Historic PhotographHistoric photograph depicting King George VI, Sovereign of the United Kingdom, who ascended the throne in December 1936, aboard the light cruiser HMS Southampton, which entered service with the Royal Navy in March 1937 and was sunk in the Mediterranean in January 1941 by an air raid during World War II.
In the photograph, the king is wearing the coat and uniform of an Admiral of the Fleet of the Royal Navy, with insignia on his sleeves and his service saber held in his left hand with a white glove, as he passes through a watertight deck hatch, greeted by an officer in full dress uniform seen from behind.
This is a vintage press photo, recognizable by the strip of paper glued to the back by photo agencies that reads "THE KING ON BOARD H.M.S. SOUTHAMPTON," used as a headline in newspapers. The shot can be dated with certainty between 1937 and 1940.
Good condition, with signs of use and a stain on the back.
