1561368600Code 6356 Antique octantAntique and rare mahogany, brass and marine ivory octant, from the end of the 18th century. Scale from 0 to 100°, brass sight with two holes, width 24.5 cm - 9.64 inches, length 28 cm - 11 inches, complete with original mahogany box, shaped as the instrument, with key. Excellent condition in perfect working order.

The octant, eighth part of the circle, is a reflective instrument, proposed around 1731 by John Hadley (1682-1744) and used to measure the height of the Sun or a star over the horizon at sea. A movable arm, equipped with a mirror and pivoted on a graduated arc, allows to obtain by reflection the image of the star superimposed on that of the horizon observed directly.
