1506003382Code 5750 Swedish pelorusAntique brass pelorus, signed A.B. LYTH Stockholm, made in the second half of the XIX century. It has a sight system with a compass card with eight winds and goniometric circle. The pelorus is mounted on a walnut plank. Very good condition. Board cm 21.4x14 - inches 8.42x5.5, pelorus diameter cm 16.5 - inches 6.49, total height cm 20 - inches 7.87.

It is a graphometer in a round crown mounted on a universal joint and it used to determinate the position of a ship: tracing two points on coast you can find two direction lines; where these lines join themselves there is the position of the ship. The term pelorus is derived from the name of Hannibal’s pilot, who assisted him in getting his troops across Europe and who kept him in touch with Carthage by sea.

A.B. Lyth was an instruments maker company and a mechanical workshop founded in 1861 in Stockholm by Georg Wilhelm Lyth (1834-1918), specialized in topographic and nautical instruments.
