1458654737Code 4578A Cooke telescopeBrass telescope covered with leather signed B. Cooke & Son Ltd Hull, firm established in the mid-nineteenth century by Bernard Cooke, a clocks maker and optician brother of the more famous Thomas Cookes, telescopes maker in New York. Made in the early 1900. Focusing with one extension, maximum length cm 61 - inch 24, minimum length cm 44.5 - inch 17.5, focal diameter cm 4 - inch 1.57. Very good condition and in order.

The legend says that a day in 1608 sons of an optician in the Dutch town of Middelburg were playing with lenses made by their father in laboratory. When one of them put a concave lens near his eye keeping a convex lens in the other hand, and stretched his arm to the bell-tower of cathedral, he saw the weather-cock on the point to become bigger and nearer. He showed this fact to his father: he fixed lenses with the right distance on a small board, making the observation more simple, creating the first instrument for optical approaching; then this instrument was perfected changing the small board into a cardboard pipe that eliminated that external light making possible to see the framed objects more clearly.
