Very good condition. Height 24 cm - 9.44 inches, base diameter cm 15 - inches 5.9.
The Philip Harris Ltd firm was a British laboratory supply company, well known to all science teachers in the UK and world-wide as one of the most important suppliers for the peculiar needs of schools. The company was originally based in Digbeth, Birmingham and was established by Thomas Ellis, a surgeon, in 1817. Philip Harris joined Ellis in 1825. They started manufacturing medicines in 1866, adding to their sales of chemist and surgical products: the company traded in Bullring, Birmingham, until 1889. They moved to 144-146 Edmund Street at the beginning of 1900.
This type of moving coil galvanometer was invented by Lord Kelvin (1824-1907) and was used to perform measurements for the isolation of telegraph cables and it offered the advantage of not being easily disturbed by the surrounding magnetic or electric fields. The name of the instrument derives from Luigi Galvani (1731-17989) discoverer of biological electricity, galvanometer and galvanization. Galvani through his experiments had hypothesized a relationship between electricity and life, observing the movement of the muscles in relation to the electrostatic charge with which they were touched.
