The company was founded in Milan in 1865 by Ignazio Porro (1801-1875) with the name Filotecnica.
Ignazio Porro managed to make a huge renewal of measuring instruments by conditioning and dominating their evolution in all civilized and civilizing countries for the benefit of all civil engineering works from land registry, to roads, railways, land reclamation, etc.
Porro can be considered the founder of modern topography, he was a skilled and very refined builder in the field of precision mechanics and optics as well as being a prolific inventor, so much so that sometimes he was ahead of his time: just think of his invention of the anallactic telescope, that is, a system of lenses with variable focal length (which is now known as zoom); or we can remember the "Porro vehicle", an arrangement of prisms to straighten images in telescopes and binoculars.
After having lived and worked in various places, in Piedmont, Paris and Florence, Porro settled in Milan and began teaching at the Polytechnic. Here he had as a student the young Angelo Salmoiraghi, and it was he who a few years later transformed the company into an industry, while also maintaining the initial teaching vocation.
