In excellent condition and complete with original mahogany box with brass hinges and closing hooks. Box size 27x18x14 cm -10.6x7x5.5 inches, level length 23 cm - 9 inches, height with base 14 cm - 5.5 inches.
The instrument consists of a telescope, a level, and a goniometric circle for calculating the horizontal angles and a base for a stand with three adjustment screws. The Level is an indispensable instrument for surveyors, used to accurately measure a plane that is truly tangential to the surface of the Earth. It is an instrument consisting of a telescope fixed parallel to the level. The enormous development of railway construction in the first half of the nineteenth century led to the demand for levels that were quick and easy to use.
William Stanley (1829-1909) was the son of a mechanical engineer; he began in 1849 to work with his father, creating new instruments for drawing and measurement. The study of drawing instruments was conformed to needs of that period: large lands were surveyed, like Indian Continent, and they were drawn nautical maps of enormous parts of ocean. Because of all these innovations, William Stanley opened in 1854 his first laboratory in Holborn London, for make drawing instruments.
