Topography studies the tools, survey techniques, calculations and drawings necessary to graphically scale a part of the physical surface of the Earth on a map, highlighting the details contained therein such as roads, rivers, buildings, crops ... Topography is one of the oldest sciences. The Egyptians measured the land along the Nile to retrace its boundaries after the periodic overflows of the river. The Greeks and especially the Romans used topographical methods that were already very precise; teams of topographers (the gromatics), following the Roman legions, drew borders and divided the conquered lands into regular plots, which were then described and represented on copper plates. Among the Arabs, topography was used for the construction of geographical maps and for the measurement of agricultural surfaces and land for cadastral use.
