1776251516Code 8355 Small Terrestrial GlobeSmall German globe published by Columbus Schulerglobus, cartographer Prof. Paul Oestergaard, Berlin-Stuttgart, in the 1950s. Lithographed papier-mâché sphere and aluminum base complete with engraved meridian circle. Good condition. Dimensions: 10 x 16 cm – 3.9 x 6.2 in.

Founded in 1909 in Berlin by Paul Oestergaard, grandson of Peter J. Oestergaard, who produced globes in the late 19th century, Columbus is the oldest globe manufacturing company still in operation in the world. For over a century, Columbus has innovated in the globe manufacturing industry, and the experience accumulated over four generations has allowed Columbus to achieve the status of world leader in this field. Peter J. Oestergaard began his production in the late 19th century. After producing terrestrial models for the Berlin newspaper Allgemeine Zeitung, he quickly became known for his extraordinarily precise globes. He then decided to open his own workshop; Peter Oestergaard was succeeded by his son Peter Oestergaard Junior, who renamed the company Drei Kegel Verlag. The company ceased operations during World War II due to the premature death of Peter Oestergaard Junior. Peter Oesterggard's grandson, Paul Oestergaard, founded the famous publishing house Columbus Verlag, which still exists today.

The first terrestrial globe known to us is the one attributed by Strabo, historian and geographer, to the Greek Crates of Mallo (circa 150 BC). The first globes, in the early 16th century, were produced under the impetus of great geographical explorations and immediately began to be used for educational purposes in princely courts, monasteries, and colleges; the globe later spread to universities and secondary schools. It was in the 19th century, characterized by extensive trade, the circulation of goods, and the introduction of compulsory education, that the desire to explore distant lands increased, rendering the old method of globe construction inadequate. Spindles printed from engraved plates were no longer sufficient, and the only real resource became lithography, thanks to which it was possible to print and rapidly update the maps that were enriched by the increase in geographical discoveries.
