Turned and ebonized wooden base, papier maché sphere. Good condition. Height cm 58.5 - inches 23, diameter of sphere cm 30 - inches 11.8.
Louis Vivien de Saint-Martin (1802 - 1896) was a French cartographer, geographer and historian.
Louis Vivien became known for the publication of the Carte électorale et administrative (1823) and the Atlas universel très complet (1825).
He wrote L'Année géographique between 1863 and 1875 and also dedicated himself to three monumental works, Histoire des découvertes géographiques, Nouveau dictionnaire de géographie universelle and Atlas universel de géographie. He was also one of the founders of the Société de Géographie.
The first known globe is attributed by Strabo, historian and geographer, to Cratete from Mallo (about 150 B.C.). First globes, in early XVI century, were made because of geographical explorations and they were used for didactic uses in courts and colleges, then in universities and high schools. In the XIX century, because of trade, scholastic obligation and wishes to know far countries, the old method to make globes was changed in the new technique of lithography that made possible to print and to update maps that following new discoveries became old very quickly.
