1776865309Code 8430 Pocket CompassSmall brass travel compass, issued to the U.S. Army during World War I, shaped like a pocket watch. The instrument features a magnetic needle that rotates horizontally, indicating the direction of magnetic north. Signed Taylor. Eight-compass compass. The lid is engraved with the U.S.C.E. The compass has a snap-lock lid with a release button inside the ring. Dimensions: 4.5 x 1.3 cm – 1.8 x 0.4 in. Good condition, fully functional.

The acronym U.S.C.E. stands for the United States Corps of Engineers, the Corps of Engineers of the United States Army. This agency was, and still is, responsible for civil and military engineering projects: construction, infrastructure, topographical surveys, maps, and technical instruments. Taylor Instrument Companies was an American company active in the production of measuring instruments between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The first historical references to the use of magnetic directional force in Europe date back to the end of the 12th century or the beginning of the 13th century and attribute the exploitation of the properties of the magnet to the Amalfitans. Gimbal suspension made its first appearance around the middle of the 16th century. An exact description can be found in the short compendium “De la esfera y de la arte de navegar” by Martin Cortés (1551), which gives precise instructions for the construction of the compass. The great discoveries of new lands, from the middle of the 15th century onwards, are largely due to the improvements in this instrument.
