1782141728Code 8398 Prismatic CompassPrismatic bearing compass signed T.G. Co. Ltd. London no. 293839, 1944, model MK III, used by British Army officers during World War II. Good condition, fully functional. Dimensions: 6 x 2.8 cm – 2.4 x 1 in. This is a small, vintage compass, typically used in recreational sailing, and therefore on vessels less subject to magnetic drift. It can also be held in the hand, allowing it to be moved away from the boat's magnetic fields. It features a sighting system with a target, complete with an optical prism for magnification, and a protractor compass rose that allows the angle between the line of sight and the north indicated by the magnetic needle to be measured.

T.G. Co. Ltd. was the abbreviation used by The Gramophone Company. After merging with its subsidiary His Master's Voice and Columbia Graphophone Co. in 1931, the company became EMI (Electric & Musical Industries). The brand name "The Gramophone Co." continued to be used for various products, but was changed to "T.G. Co. Ltd." for wartime contracts. This name ceased to be used at the end of the war.

The first historical references to the use of magnetic directional force in Europe date back to the late 12th or early 13th century, and attribute the exploitation of the properties of the magnet to the Amalfitans. Gimbal suspension made its first appearance around the mid-16th century. An accurate description can be found in the short compendium De la esfera y de la arte de navegar by Martín Cortés (1551), which provides precise instructions for the construction of the compass. Improvements to the instrument are largely responsible for the great discoveries of new lands from the mid-15th century onwards.
