1716040999Code 7936 SundialDiptych sundial in engraved boxwood with brass hinges and clasps, book-shaped, English manufacture, mid-19th century. The clock is equipped with a compass for orientation inserted into the base with needle block and complete with eight-wind rose on paper and protractor circle. The gnomon is made up of a wire that is tensioned, according to the direction of the celestial axis, when the cover of the clock is opened. A label located on the inside of the lid contains instructions in English regarding the operation of the instrument. The time dial is traced inside the lid, indicating the daylight hours. In excellent condition, in perfect working order. Measurements closed: 7.7x5.1x2-inches 3x2.1x1.6 cm.

The functioning of the sundial depends on the apparent movement of the Sun. It consists of a gnomon or stylus which projects the solar shadow onto a surface crossed by the hour lines. To read the time correctly, the watch must be oriented north, which is done using the compass. This simple yet ingenious system spread in the 17th and 18th centuries through the production of specimens, in wood or ivory.

The sundial is a horizontal line that passes through the North and South points. Meridiana, in our language, is also synonymous with sundial. From ancient times to the present day, sundials of different types, shapes and sizes have been created, such as portable models that performed the functions of our wrist and pocket watches. Different peoples and different cultures have then adopted various ways of measuring time in relation to their needs: in fact, ancient sundials can still be observed which do not follow the hours we use today (astronomical hours) but, for example, Babylonian hours, Italic hours, canonical hours, etc.
