1619104980Code 644 English barometerEnglish barometer of mahogany wood with ebony threads signed Wisker York from the early 19th century, complete with reading vernier for checking the variation in pressure, large mercury thermometer and hygrometer. Height 103 cm - 40.55 inches, width 12.5 cm - 4.9 inches, depth/thickness 8 cm - 3.14 inches. Excellent condition, fully functional.

Mercury was well known by Chinese and Hindu people; it has been found in 1500 B.C. Egyptian graves. From 500 B.C. it was used as amalgamating for other metals. The old Greeks used it as pigment for painting, the Romans used it in cosmetology. Medieval alchemists thought that all things were formed starting from mercury, and they thought that when it has been become hard, it became gold. In XVIII and XIX century, it was used mercury nitrate to remove hairs from leathers for make hats: this habit caused many cases of brain damages in people making hats using this substance, then the expression “mad as a hatter”.

Matthew Wisker was an optician-instrument-maker, working in Spurriergate (York) from 1777-1804. The business continued for 3 more generations.
