It is an instrument equipped with two concave mirrors, the primary mirror collects the light and makes it converge towards a focus placed in front of the secondary mirror; in turn the secondary mirror brings the light back towards the primary mirror, which has a hole in the center containing the eyepiece.
In the 18th century, there were numerous instrument makers in London who built telescopes. The best known was the Scotsman James Short for his skill in casting and hand polishing the pair of metal mirrors that made up the optical parts of his telescopes. His skill was so recognized that his telescopes were purchased by most European and American astronomical observatories.
The Gregorian telescope takes its name from its creator, the Englishman James Gregory (1638-1675), who described it in the work Optica Promota of 1663: it is therefore slightly earlier than the one that Newton created in 1668. It is an ancient instrument astronomical consisting of two concave mirrors: the primary mirror collects the light and makes it converge towards a focus placed in front of the secondary mirror; in turn the secondary mirror brings the light back towards the primary mirror, which has a hole in the center containing the eyepiece: the resulting image is upright, unlike what happens with Newtonian telescopes which produce an upside down image. For this reason, Gregorian telescopes are also suitable for terrestrial observations.
