1473326582Code 5136 Italian armillary sphereArmillary sphere, Italian manufacture, made between 1807 and 1845 and attributable to Fratelli Ubicini publisher in Milan, with stylistic influences of armillary spheres made by Ubaldo Villa. It’s possible to date it at that time because in 1807 the asteroid Vesta was discovered, reported in this armillary sphere but still considered a planet, according to the classification prior to 1845. The sphere is formed by a structure, fixed to a base made of turned and ebonized wood, composed of a wooden vertical circle containing the equinoxes and by a wooden horizontal circle containing, in addition to the ecliptic, the zodiac signs on a band of painted papier maché; inside them, mounted on a central pivot, they are concentric wooden rings depicting the planets according to the discoveries of that period, and the Earth and the Moon (that can rotate) fixed to the central pin through a metal arm and depicted through two spheres (the sphere representing the Earth is made of papier maché and reports outlined continents, the Moon is a wooden sphere), as well as the Sun, represented by a gilded wooden sphere. The depicted celestial bodies, starting with the farthest from the Sun are: Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, Pallas, Ceres, Juno, Vesta, Mars, Earth, Venus, Mercury. Each circle which depicts a planet shows on one side, in addition to its name, also its distance from the Sun and the duration of its revolution. Very good condition; restoration on the base (woodworm treatment), cleaning, rebuilt the gilding to the sphere that represents the Sun, restored the color of the sphere representing the Earth. Measures 49 cm (h) x 27.5 cm (diameter).
