De Rossel edited in Naples by Tipografia della Reale Accademia di Marina (Typography of the Navy Royal Academy) in 1819. It includes six folded plates. Very good condition. Measures of the closed book cm 14x2x22 – inches 5.52x0.78x8.67.

In 1774 the English Captain James Cook during his explorations reached an archipelago in the Pacific Southwest and called it New Caledonia because of the similarity of the landscape with the hills of Scotland, which the Romans called Caledonia precisely. In 1788 King Louis XVI of France sent there an expedition commanded by the Comte de La Perouse, who has been lost in a cyclone off Vanikolo in the Solomon Islands. In 1792 Admiral Bruny D'Entrecasteaux, sent to search for the missing, travelled for an entire month with some of his men walking across the northern part of Grande Terre, the largest island of the archipelago of New Caledonia. Editor and co-operator of this journey he was M. De Rossel, and the book Principles of nautical astronomy is the translation of the compendium drawn from observations made ​​by De Rossel during the trip of Bruny D'Entrecasteaux.
