1648292839Code 1X Apothecary CabinetEnglish apothecary cabinet dated to the first half of the nineteenth century, with mahogany case, brass handle and brass hinges, complete with key. The cabinet has a rectangular base and wood dividers for various glass containers; in the drawer below, that can be opened only from the inside by a pin, are stored: pestle, mortar, small balance with its weights and other containers. Very good condition. Measures xm 21,5x16,5 h 21 inches 8.5 x 6.5 h 8.3.
Till the last Middle age, pharmacy was a part of medicine. Modern pharmacy’s bases go back to Renaissance. A very important historic moment was the discovery of America in 1492 and the following import of new vegetal species, helping to improve pharmacological study of plants. In 1617 it was published a work which proved very useful for medicine on board ships: The Surgeon Mate by John Woodall. This work analyzed the contents of apothecary cabinet and explained how to use it in emergency situations, such as for amputations. The pharmacy and medicine on board turned out to be fundamental even on boats of the pirates, both for the treatment of diseases for the treatment of fractures and wounds: the English pirate Blackbeard in 1718, while besieging the port of Charleston in South Carolina, claimed of medical supplies as a ransom for the return of the city administrator and the four year old son of him that he had taken as hostage.
