In the second half of the eighteenth century, a society of instruments makers became established as one of the best. The company was owned by two brothers, John and Edward Troughton, both suffered from a congenital color blindness, then they entrusted the part of the work on the optics to Dollonds or Tulleys. The Troughton firm gave his instruments to many major observatories in the world: Paris, Krakow, Brussels, Madras and Cadiz, and also it received several awards. Due to advancing age, Edward Troughton took William Simms in companies in 1826. Under the management Simms, Troughton & of Simms the company expanded, and Simms got the important task of building a theodolite for the exploration of India by Sir George Everest, during which he discovered the world's highest mountain region in 1852. The firm of Troughton & Simms remained in operation until 1922 when it merged with Thomas Cooke & Sons, forming the Cooke, Troughton & Simms, Ltd.
