1613038142Code 6846 Vintage compassPocket compass used by British aviation officers of chromed brass in the shape of a pocket watch, signed Dennison Birmingham VI 51263 from 1917. The compass has a snap-lock lid with release button inside the ring . Four-winds compass card complete with goniometric circle for calculating horizontal angles. Excellent condition, fully functional, diameter 4.5 cm - 1.77 inches, thickness 1.8 cm - 0.7 inches.

The compass is marked with the Government 'Broad Arrow' Mark, that means it was issued to the Officer by the British Government and was Government property. In 1850 Aaron Lufkin Dennison founds in Roxbury, Massachussetts, the world's first mechanical watch industry. In 1854 the company moves to Waltham, and the factory get to employ more than 3,000 people; one of the customers is Abraham Lincoln. In 1900 the company builds its own astronomical observatory. In 1911 a chronometer produced by the company is chosen by the United States, Canada and United Kingdom for naval fleets, and in 1915 the company begins to manufacture watches for the American army.

The Greeks and the Romans didn't know the possibility to use magnetic fields for orient, but this possibility probably was known by the Chinese people: about in 2600 B.C. Hoang-Ti the emperor won Tchi-Yeou the prince using a magic cart, the See-Nan (cart indicating the South), finding the way of escape of the enemy that has been covered by smoke: on this cart there was a rotating human shaped figure with an arm stretched indicating the South (obviously indicating the North too, but the South was the most important cardinal point for the Chinese people). The Chinese people used magnetic fields also for spectacles: throwing magnetized arrows like dice, they indicated south like a magic, amazing the public.
