1575626641Code 6517 Prismatic compassPrismatic compass, a small compass, produced by Stanley in the forties and supplied to British officers during the Second World War, typically used in pleasure sailing, therefore on boats less subject to magnetic deviation. It can also be held in the hand and therefore away from magnetic fields. It is equipped with a sighting system with an optical prism for magnification and a goniometric compass card to measure the angle between the line of sight and the north indicated by the magnetic needle. Very good condition, fully functional. Measures diameter 6 cm - 2.36 inches, height 3 cm - 1.18 inches.

William Stanley (1829-1909) was the son of a mechanical engineer; he began in 1849 to work with his father, creating new instruments for drawing and measurement. The study of drawing instruments was conformed to needs of that period: large lands were surveyed, like Indian Continent, and they were drawn nautical maps of enormous parts of ocean. Because of all these innovations, William Stanley opened in 1854 his first laboratory in Holborn London, for make drawing instruments.
