Allen & Hanburys Ltd. was a historic English pharmaceutical company founded in London in 1715 by Silvanus Bevan, a Welsh apothecary, who quickly earned a reputation for the integrity and quality of its products.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the company grew and changed names and partners several times before adopting its current name.
William Allen, a chemist and scientist, joined the company, and upon joining the Hanbury family, the firm became Allen & Hanburys in 1856.
In the 19th century, the company expanded and was among the first in Great Britain to manufacture cod liver oil, becoming a major center for galenical preparations, as well as producing a wide variety of stainless steel surgical instruments, operating tables, and pediatric scales.
Allen & Hanburys had an international presence with branches and agencies in Canada, India, Australia, South Africa, Argentina, and other countries.
In 1958, the company was acquired by Glaxo Laboratories Ltd, which later became part of the GlaxoSmithKline group. The Allen & Hanburys name was retained as the brand for the respiratory division until the 2010s.
