1770216931Code 8446 OphthalmoscopeOphthalmoscope signed by Medical Supply Association Agents for Curry & Paxton, London, from the second half of the 19th century, made of chromed brass with interchangeable mirror and lenses and an ivory handle.
Used for examining the fundus of the eye, it became widespread in the second half of the 19th century after Hermann von Helmholtz's invention (1851). It represented a fundamental breakthrough in ophthalmological diagnostics, allowing direct observation of the retina and optic nerve for the first time.
