1769858328Code 8438 Marine ChronometerOnboard chronometer manufactured by Waltham Watch Co. USA, with an 8-day manual winding, serial number 1807449, dating to the mid-1920s. Housed in its original mahogany case with a double mahogany and glass cover, featuring brass corners and edge guards, the chronometer is mounted on gimbals secured by a lateral screw lever, hinges, edge guards, and brass clasps. Good condition, watch in perfect working order, non-original locking key. Dimensions: 12.5 x 12.5 x 12.5 cm – 4.9 x 4.9 x 4.9 in.

This type of chronometer was used to keep time on board, coordinate shifts, and serve as a reliable reference on the bridge or in the cabin. The chronometer's eight-day power supply is manually powered via the crown at 12 o'clock, which also serves to set the time. The dial is made of silkscreened metal, the hands are blued steel, and the hours are in Arabic numerals. The seconds are displayed on a subdial at 6 o'clock. The days of power reserve are displayed at 8 o'clock, and a red indicator appears at 4 o'clock to indicate the watch is running low.

The Waltham Watch Company operated from 1850 to 1957, headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, and operated facilities now preserved as historic landmarks. It was the most important American watch manufacturer and the first in the world to introduce industrial production of precision watches with fully interchangeable parts. It supplied timekeeping instruments to the U.S. railroads, navy, air force, and armed forces, especially between World War I and World War II, and was renowned for the reliability and ease of maintenance of its movements. In addition to watches, it produced compasses, tachometers for Ford, and many other precision instruments.
