1709813299Code 7792aBoatswain's whistle in brass and copper, English manufacture from the 1920s, anchor on the sides. Length 13.x2.5x1.8 cm – 5.3x0.8x0.7 inches. Good condition. This type of whistle is composed of a small tube, called a cannon, attached to the end of the handle, called a keel, and a ball in the shape of a perforated barrel, called a buoy, from which the sound comes out. It is held at keel height, between thumb and forefinger; with the other fingers you adjust the intensity and modulation of the sound.

Giving orders and signals using a whistle or a series of modulated whistles is a system that is lost in the mists of time. It seems that the whistle was used on ships to transmit the commander's orders as early as the Middle Ages, but its presence on board is certainly known in the late seventeenth century. Until the advent of electronic amplification equipment, the whistle was the only way to be heard even in particularly adverse conditions, for example when the wind was howling, at sea during a storm or during a battle, and the human voice was not it was sufficient to transmit orders capable of being heard and understood by all.
