1719312435Code 657 Petrified WoodSlice of wood from the petrified forest of Arizona and dating back to the Triassic. It is a slice of trunk complete with bark of the conifer Araucarioxylon Arizonicum, an extinct species and the state fossil of Arizona. In good condition, diamond polishing protected underneath by a hard resin mesh. Measurements 63x55 cm, thickness 2.5 inches 24.8x21.6x1.

In the Triassic period about 200 million years ago, Arizona was a tropical expanse and grew a forest of Araucarioxylon Arizonicum trees that reached up to 60 meters in height with a diameter of about 3 meters, it was very similar to the giant sequoia. A 2007 study highlights that the petrified logs in the National Park may be composed of several genera of different species than initially believed. Fallen trees were buried in volcanic ash and due to the rapid burial and lack of oxygen the wood was not decomposed as if it had remained on the surface. The crystallization of the wood, transforming it into a fossil, occurred through the silica and other minerals dissolved in the groundwater which were absorbed by the porous wood for many years. Millions of years ago the area sank and was completely flooded with fresh water, sinking deep and was completely buried. Millions of years later the area rose above sea level due to the pressure of the continental plate, the uplift broke the logs and over time the wind and water wore away the layers of sediment, exposing the wood fossilized.
