2522013172728734Code 2575 Magic lanternGerman magic lantern from the early 1900 signed DRGM (Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster), used to project images painted on glass plates or on film. The closed box, equipped with a chimney pot contains the oil lantern whose light is filtered by a hole on which is applied a lens. Original box. Very good condition. Lantern measures cm 23x13.5xh42 - inches 9x5.31x16.53.

The acronym D.R.G.M. means Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster, used for something registered inside all of the Germany states and not only locally. D.R.G.M. registration was used from 1891 to the end of October 1952, when all registrations were definitely marked with 'Deutsches Bundesgebrauchsmuster' (D.B.G.M.) or simply with 'Gebrauchsmuster' or 'Gebrauchsmusterschutz'.

The magic lantern is the direct ancestor of cinema projection; it is a projection of images usually painted on glass with a closed box that contained a candle or a lamp, whose light was filtered through a lens. The oldest description of a magic lantern dates back to 1646, when the Jesuit Athanasius Kircher included it in the book Ars Magna Lucis et umbrae. Around 1660 the Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens cited it as an invention of him, just called magic lantern, while the optical Don Matteo Campani in Italy, made it just a few years later. Goethe also mentions the magic lantern, in The Sorrows of Young Werther: (...) what ever the world to our heart without love? It's like a magic lantern without light! But as soon as you will introduce the lamp, the most beautiful images appear on the white wall (...).
