Metal sphere covered with paper printed by an engraved copper plate and watercoloured by hand, turned and ebonized wooden base. Very good condition. Height 45 cm - inch 17.7, diameter of sphere 23.5 cm - inch 9.25.
Giovanni Gussoni in 1874 had purchased the business of the printer Antonio Ronchi in Via Unione 5 in Milan, before moving in 1883 in the shop in Piazza Duomo; Vittorio Gussoni followed his father, and on 16th April 1907 he sold the company to a collaborator, John Serra, who continued the business untill November 1914.
The first known globe is attributed by Strabo, historian and geographer, to Cratete from Mallo (about 150 B.C.). First globes, in early XVI century, were made because of geographical explorations and they were used for didactic uses in courts and colleges, then in universities and high schools. In the XIX century, because of trade, scholastic obligation and wishes to know far countries, the old method to make globes was changed in the new technique of lithography that made possible to print and to update maps that following new discoveries became old very quickly.

The legislative decree n. 42/2004 stipulates that who sells works of art or historical and archaeological items has the obligation to deliver to the purchaser the documents attesting to the authenticity of the object, or at least to submit the documents relating to the probable attribution and origin.
