1697300130Code 638 Torricellian BarometerTorricellian mercury barometer in mahogany wood, with double lateral thread in cedar and ebony wood, signed A. Pozzi Wootton Bassett, active between 1822 and 1830. The instrument is complete with vernier reading for verifying the pressure variation atmospheric indicator, alcohol thermometer, hygrometer and level for the correct positioning of the instrument on the wall. Height 98 cm – inch 38.6, width 25 cm – inch 9.8, depth/thickness 4.5 cm – inch 1.7. Good condition, working perfectly. For safety during transport the barometer will be shipped emptied of mercury. The mercury will be placed in a sealed container in the package together with the barometer.

Since ancient times, man, as a farmer and navigator, has observed and attempted to predict climate trends. The scientific study of the changes that occur in the atmosphere began in the mid-17th century, in connection with experiments aimed at demonstrating the existence of the void, which the ancient philosophers denied because "nature abhors a void!". If you fill a long tube with water and place it upside down in a bucket of water, the column of liquid will descend until its weight is counterbalanced by the pressure of the air on the surface of the water contained in the bucket: at a certain point there will be a vacuum in the upper, closed end of the tube.

Evangelista Torricelli (1608-1647), mathematician and physicist, disciple of Galileo, was the first, in 1643, to build an instrument capable of detecting changes in air pressure. He described his experiment as the result of the discovery that changes in atmospheric pressure are linked to changes in the weather.
