According to ministerial school programs of the '20s and '30s, it was necessary that the schools were equipped with certain teaching aids. Produced by the same publishers who published textbooks, they ranged from play materials for nursery to scientific instruments for schools and they represented a very important sector of the retail market. The catalogs of these tools, depending on the size of the publisher, ranged from simple lists of materials to rich photographic documentation. A significant case are Mondadori catalogs, with some comments of schools and teachers who had already purchased some teaching aids, as well as photographs of establishments of the publishing house and images that portrayed official visits there.
Arnoldo Mondadori began his publishing activity just eighteen in a printing in Ostiglia, the Tipografia e Cartoleria L. Manzoli: it was 1907 and Arnoldo, along with a small group of editors, created Luce! Giornale Popolare Istruttivo (Light! Popular newspaper Instructional), offering himself to the print shop as an apprentice just to print the newspaper. Soon, however, the vocation of journalism would have won by the editorial one and in a few years, the typography at Arnoldo offered himself as apprentice would become La Sociale (The Social), the first nucleus of the future establishment of Graphic Arts La Sociale of A. Mondadori and C. The first book was published in 1912, The Hague Madama, a collection of short stories for children by Tomaso Monicelli. The following year was inaugurated the first series, the Bibliotechina della Lampada (Small library of the lamp). During the First World War, the publisher did not interrupt the activity but rather he worked hard to publishing magazines for the troops at the front. The 1919 was the time for decisive choices concerning the consolidation of young publishing house. Arnoldo Mondadori in fact moved the direction to Milan, already the seat of the leading publishers of the time, Sonzogno and Treves, and he opened a graphic factory in San Nazaro, Verona.
Because of the idea of Copernicus about a heliocentric system, it was possible, in spite of many difficulties, to make mechanical models of the all known universe, with the Earth turning around itself, the Moon turning around the Earth and both turning around the Sun. A mechanical orrery can represent the idea of a Universe moving as a gigantic clock mechanism.
