1582886656Code 576A Trieste dioramaNaval diorama of the Trieste steamship launched in 1908 in the Monfalcone shipyards. The steamer in this diorama is depicted with 3 smokestacks, actually it had only one smokestack. Made of wood on colored cardboards, oval shaped and framed in the original painted wooden frame. The shipbuilding activity of Monfalcone was started by the Cosulich family in the early 1900s. 63x48 cm - 24.8x18.89 inches.

"The Adventure of the Trieste Steamboat" recalls a story that really happened in the summer of 1910, when the Austrian Lloyd's ship left Trieste to reach Bombay. During the ocean crossing from African to Indian coasts, between 15 June and 3 July, the steamer stumbled upon a storm that caused the propeller shaft to break. For almost three weeks the ship, on which there were almost a hundred passengers plus seventy crew members, remained at the mercy of the storm, lost in the ocean, without any possibility of calling for help. These were dramatic days, despite the attempts to rescue an English ship that repeatedly attempted to tow "Trieste", attempts that cost the life of a sailor. At the end the "Trieste", reached by the coast by some tugboats, managed to enter the port of Bombay, where it was greeted by great demonstrations of jubilation (a telegram of the emperor Franz Joseph also arrived), since the ship was now given for lost. Newspapers from all over the world dealt with the matter and, on his return to Trieste, the captain of the steamship Edmondo Nitsche published a detailed account of the events.
