1636122463Code 7078 Antique spyglassBrass telescope with leather-covered handle, focusing with three extensions. Maximum length 72 cm - 28.34 inches, minimum 24.5 cm - 9.64 inches, focal diameter 4 cm - 1.57 inches. French manufacture from the second half of the 19th century. Excellent condition, fully functional, complete with base for support made to measure of wood and brass.

Galilei never said that telescope was his own invention, but Della Porta, feeling defrauded of this invention, in a letter to Federico Cesi wrote that telescope was a stupid and simple thing and he had just spoken about it in his work De Refractione. But when Galilei showed the telescope to some senators of the Venice Republic the surprise was enormous, but it was small the reward for Galilei: the Republic didn’t buy this telescope because some councillors said that some similar instruments were just sold with lower prices; Galilei obtained simply an increase in salary and the confirmation as teacher in Padua where he taught mathematics.
