Theodolite is an antique topographic instruments used for terrestrial observations for measure horizontal and vertical angles. This instrument includes a base, a telescope, two graduated circles, a compass, regulation descending screws and small microscopes for reading circles.
William Stanley (1829-1909) was the son of a mechanical engineer; he began in 1849 to work with his father, creating new instruments for drawing and measurement. The study of drawing instruments was conformed to needs of that period: large lands were surveyed, like Indian Continent, and they were drawn nautical maps of enormous parts of ocean. Because of all these innovations, William Stanley opened in 1854 his first laboratory in Holborn London, for make drawing instruments.
