1493982394Code 5671 Antique hourglassHourglass made of brass and blown glass, measuring 15 minutes. Height cm 11 - inches 4.33, diameter cm 5 - inches 1.96. French manufacture of the second half of the nineteenth century. Very good condition.

The greek name κλεψύδρα (Klepsydra) literally means "water-stealing." The time is measured in fact, using this tool, via a steady stream of water in output from a container. In Greece, the use of the hourglass was introduced in 325 BC: they were stone containers, truncated cone shaped, from which the water flowed from a hole in the bottom at a constant rate. There were, however, also other types of hourglass: for example with internal notches which marked the passage of hours, filled with a constant flow of water; other hourglasses had two containers, one larger full of water, and a smaller one placed inside and drilled on the bottom that sank in a certain time.
