1710604361Code 7748 Nautical CompassBrass and copper nautical compass on gimbal and housed in its original wooden box with brass lid locking hooks, signed Eugene M. Sherman Seattle U.S.A.Trade Dirigo Mark from the 1920s. The compass is made up of a cylindrical copper container, on the bottom of which is fixed a hard metal stem, on which the octave rose complete with appropriately fastened protractor circle is placed. Box measures 19.2x19x11.5 cm – 7.5x7.5x4.5 inches – compass diameter 13.5 cm – 5.35 inches. Good condition.

Eugene M. Sherman born in Lexington in 1872 moved with his wife Alice to Bellevue in Washington state in 1911 opening a new business the Dirigo Compass Factory, "Dirigo" was the motto of the state of Maine, Eugene's home state, and translated to ““I direct.” While Eugene produced compasses and other navigational instruments, his wife Alice was responsible for Bellevue's music scene. A skilled violinist, he taught and organized musical concerts throughout the Bellevue area. Eugene shared his wife's love of music, and after retiring and selling the compass factory in 1944, he devoted his time to making violins. Neighbors often heard Eugene and Alice playing duets on the porch of their home, trying out new instruments.

The Greeks and Romans were still unaware of the possibility of exploiting magnetic fields to orient themselves, while it seems that this possibility was already known to the Chinese in some way: around 2600 BC. Emperor Hoang-Ti managed to defeat Prince Tchi-Yeou in battle thanks to a "magical" chariot, the See-Nan (south-indicating chariot). The emperor, thanks to this device, identified the enemy's escape route, even though the enemy had hidden it with a blanket of smoke: a human-shaped wooden silhouette was fixed on the chariot which rotated on itself and which, with the outstretched arm always pointed south (indicating the south obviously also indicated the north at the same time, but the south was considered by the Chinese to be the most important cardinal point). The Chinese also used their discoveries relating to magnetic fields as a form of entertainment and show: they threw magnetized arrows as if they were dice, and these aligned in a south-north direction as if by magic, which greatly impressed and amazed the spectators.
