1672411541Code 7497 Survey CompassBrass survey compass made in 1914 circa, signed The Magnapole Pat N. 22598 Short 6 Mason Makers London; small compass used away from magnetic fields to check the ship’s course. The compass is complete with a goniometric circle and a block of compass card. Diameter 5.3 cm x 2 cm (h) - 2 x 0.78 inches. Very good condition.

Magnapole was a some hand-held marching compasses designed and sold by Short & Mason Ltd and the name of some pocket compasses made in cooperation with Taylor.

The earliest historical notes on the use of magnetic power in Europe are dated back to the end of the 12th century or the beginning of XIII century and attribute to the Amalfiers the exploitation of the properties of the magnet. The cardanic suspension made its first appearance around the middle of the XVI century. An exact description is given in the brief compendium “De la esfera y de la arte de navegar” by Martin Cortés (1551), which gives precise instructions to make a compass. The improvement of this instrument is largely attributed to the discoveries of new lands, from the mid-XVcentury.
