1633525852Code 6907 Nautical compassLiquid nautical compass of brass and glass from the early 1900s, mounted on a universal joint and mounted on a walnut wood board with custom-made brass supports. Complete with double goniometric circle, both external, of engraved brass, and on the compass card; the compass was overhauled in 1992. Compass diameter with circle 22 cm - 8.66 inches, base size 29.5x15 cm - 11.61x5.9 inches. Excellent condition, fully functional.

This compass has a brass cylindrical box, named mortar; on its bottom a hard metal stem is fixed, named sensitive element; on this element it is leaned a compass card, appropriately fixed: the zero has to coincide with magnetic polarity. To limit friction, mortar is filled with a low freezing point liquid, that has to quench rapidly swings, and it is closed with a strong glass protection.

The earliest historical notes on the use of magnetic power in Europe are dated back to the end of the 12th century or the beginning of XIII century and attribute to the Amalfiers the exploitation of the properties of the magnet. The cardanic suspension made its first appearance around the middle of the XVI century. An exact description is given in the brief compendium “De la esfera y de la arte de navegar” by Martin Cortés (1551), which gives precise instructions to make a compass. The improvement of this instrument is largely attributed to the discoveries of new lands, from the mid-XVcentury.
