1614351262Code 6890 Dry compassDry compass in its original wooden box with slot lid. English manufacture from the second half of the 19th century. The compass consists of a brass and glass vessel on the bottom of which a metal stem is fixed on which the eight-wind compass card of paper printed by engraving on copper plate is placed, complete with a goniometric circle. Excellent condition, fully functional. Box size 19.5x19.5x13.5 cm - 7.67x7.67x5.31 inches, compass diameter 14 cm - 5.5 inches.

The earliest historical notes on the use of magnetic power in Europe are dated back to the end of the 12th century or the beginning of XIII century and attribute to the Amalfiers the exploitation of the properties of the magnet. The cardanic suspension made its first appearance around the middle of the XVI century. An exact description is given in the brief compendium “De la esfera y de la arte de navegar” by Martin Cortés (1551), which gives precise instructions to make a compass. The improvement of this instrument is largely attributed to the discoveries of new lands, from the mid-XV century.
