1614335144Code 6884 Surveying compassMagnetic surveying compass, oak wood with brass hinges and closing hooks; instrument consisting of a magnetized needle free to rotate on a horizontal plane, marking the direction of magnetic north with the tip of the needle, compass card with eight winds printed by engraving on copper plate complete with goniometric circle divided into 360°. English manufacture from the second half of the 19th century. Good condition, signs of repair on the wood. Cm 7x7 - 2.75x2.75 inches, thickness cm 2 - inches 0.78.

The invention of compass is mysterious but it is well known that magnetite was discovered in Magnesia, a city of Asia Minor. At the beginning of ‘300 Giordano da Pisa spoke about magnet as “very useful and necessary” in navigation. Dante in Paradise XII 29 wrote about magnetic needle that indicates the North.
