Wittnauer was a watch and jewelery company, founded in New York by Albert Wittnauer. Albert Wittnauer moved to New York from Switzerland in 1872, when he was sixteen years old. He started working for his cousin J. Eugene Robert, who imported luxury Swiss watches, and a few years later he decided to start his own watch company. In 1880 he created his own brand, and in 1890 the company became formally known as A. Wittnauer Company. The company is known for some famous models, such as the Wittnauer AllProof used by the aviator Jimmie Mattern in his attempt to tour the world; Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Vega was also equipped with Wittnauer devices for crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The brand was also one of the three contenders with the Omega speedmaster and the Rolex Daytona for the first mission on the moon.
