1528297554Code 5902 Japanese compassLiquid compass on universal joint mounted on walnut board. made in the early 1900s and written in Japanese characters. The compass has a brass cylindrical box; on its bottom it is fixed a hard metal stem, called sensitive element, on which it is mounted the compass card. Very good condition. Board cm 16.5x8 - inches 6.49x3.14, total height cm 9.5 - inches 3.74.

The invention of the compass is mysterious but it is well known that magnetite was discovered in Magnesia, a city of Asia Minor. We can find the first indications about the use in Europe of the magnetic force for orientation at the end of the XII century because of merchants and Arab navigators.
