652013134728734Code 509A Chevallier barometerAntique Torricelli mercury barometer, made of mahogany, with thermometer, signed Mon. Chevallier L'Ing. Queslin 1, rue de la Bourse, France second half of XIX century. Very good condition. Height cm 100 – inches 39.4, width cm 31 – inches 12.21.

It’s a barometer made of mahogany with a decorated cyma representing some fruits; this barometer was the most used before appearance of aneroid barometer; behind, in a space there is inside the barometric glass siphon pipe. A small iron or glass weight on the level of mercury in the short part of siphon, goes up and down together with the level of liquid. A thread connects weight and pulley and it’s kept tight by a counterweight. In the centre of pulley they are fixed two pointers: the first one moves on dial following changes of atmospheric pressure; the other one, fixed, makes possible to read changes of pressure by a regulation screw. On the white opaline dial of this barometer they are indicated seven atmospheric conditions.

Pierre Marcel Augustin Chevallier (1797-1841) started an optical business in about 1835, at 1 Rue de la Bourse, Paris. After his death, his business was purchased by Pierre Louis Amédée Queslin (1819-1883). He and his successors called their shop “Maison de Chevallier”; they described themselves as “the sole successors to Chevallier” and often signed their instruments “Maison Chevallier L’Ingr Queslin”.
