1575630601Code 6495 Vintage orreryRare orrery, or mechanical model depicting the solar system, from the second half of the nineteenth century. On the cartouche of the globe we read: Globus Jan Felkla Syn Roztoky Prahy. Bronze patinated cast iron structure, brass gears and terrestrial sphere of papier maché. 60x18 cm - 23.6x7 inches, height 47 cm - 18.8 inches. Very good condition and perfectly working.

It is an ancient astronomical instrument made up of clockwork mechanisms, which allows the motion that the Moon and the Earth perform within the Solar system to be observed from outside, by operating a crank placed under the Sun's gear.

Jan Felkl (1817-1878) was born in Bohemia and already in 1840 he had designed some globes in 6 different sizes. During the following 20 years he became the biggest maker of globes in market Austro-Hungarian, making terrestrial and celestial globes in 17 different languages, lunar globes and planetaria. Felkl showed his globes at international fairs in 1867 in Paris and in 1873 in Vienna. He established his Geographic and lithographic Institute in Prague for Making globes and maps. In 1870 he moved his factory from Prague to Roztok and his youngest son became his partner in the firm now named Felkl & Son, making globes and selling them all over the Europe and also in Usa. After death of Jan Felkl, this business was continued by family till early ‘900.
